Roof Garden and Terrace Dining in London

London offers some unrivalled outdoor dining locations. Enjoy the city in style at these rooftop eateries and fine-dining spots with unique outdoor areas.

The Roof Gardens in London
London's original rooftop oasis is in Kensington. The Roof Gardens are more than just a place to eat. The 7th floor dreamscape includes the Babylon Restaurant, an outdoor terrace with stunning views of London, gardens complete with wandering flamingos and a weekend nightclub. Once you arrive, you'll never want to leave.

Barbican Restaurants
Searcys – the company behind the Champagne Bar at St. Pancras and the restaurant at 30 St Mary's Axe – is jazzing up the Barbican's restaurant offerings. Choose from the Lakeside Restaurant, where the menu of seafood platters, posh Ploughman's and gourmet mini hot dogs, has been designed to accompany your champagne. Or, there's the Balcony Bistro Bar for some classic Mediterranean food. Both spots are set in the sunshine, next to the complex's urban ponds and lakes.

Amphitheatre Restaurant at the Royal Opera House
This high-up haven in Covent Garden has great views, thanks to its top-floor location. The peaceful al fresco restaurant at the Royal Opera House makes for perfect pre-opera or ballet dining: even if you're not seeing a show, you can still eat at the Amphitheatre Restaurant between the hours of 12-3pm, Monday to Saturday. The European menu changes monthly.

East Room
This new wine bar sources wines solely from the southern hemisphere: Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. And where better to sample the wines than on the East Room's new sunny terrace which opens this summer (mid-June). Combine this with the restaurant's light and healthy food menu of seared yellow fin tuna carpaccio and Cornish crab linguini, and it's a guaranteed top summer dining spot.

Devonshire Terrace
A new arrival to London's outdoor gastronomic choices, the Devonshire opens in July near Liverpool Street Station. The all-day British dining room includes a huge covered terrace as big as the restaurant itself, where people can eat al fresco all year round. Those desperate for a tan should hang out on the adjacent balcony overlooking the square, to catch some summer rays. Heading up the kitchen is Justin Charles, previously at the Cheyne Walk Brasserie.

Le Coq d'Argent
A favourite with city slickers, this French fine-dining restaurant is a member of the D&D restaurant empire and boasts one of London's top rooftop spaces. Le Coq d'Argent's 6th floor garden is designed by Arabella Lennox-Boyd and has panoramic views of some of London's best known landmarks.

Trafalgar Roof Garden
The Trafalgar Roof Garden is open in the summer months. It's a top spot for snapping up the sights of Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye from way up high. The secluded candlelit roof garden is a great spot for romancing or perhaps a glass of champagne or 2. The space is designed by Dirk Dalichau.

Chez Gerard The Opera Terrace
Dine high above the bustle of Covent Garden Piazza at this centrally located member of the Chez Gerard chain. The French menu has all the classics like goats' cheese salad, baked snails in garlic butter, and steak and chips. It's a top spot for people-watching and resting your legs after a day of shopping.
